City pledges up to $50,000 for Main Street Program

MANITOWOC — The Common Council on Monday unanimously approved giving the Mainly Manitowoc group up to $50,000 toward receiving Main Street Program status for the downtown.
The city's 10 aldermen approved the plan that limits the city's contribution to $1 per every $2 raised by Mainly Manitowoc. The city will give up to $50,000, according to the resolution passed Monday.
Mainly Manitowoc is currently soliciting private donations.
The state Commerce Department's Main Street Program helps restore downtowns as centers of community activity and commerce. As a member of the program, Manitowoc would receive technical support and assistance for five years.
To be accepted for the Main Street program, the Commerce Department said it wants to see a financial commitment from businesses and individuals.
Mainly Manitowoc must apply for Main Street status by Feb. 29.
Mainly Manitowoc Member Cathy Karl, owner of Heart & Homestead on North Eighth Street, said the goal is to raise a minimum of $70,000 per year for three years.
"I think this is very good for Manitowoc," Alderman Jim Brey said about the Main Street Program initiative.
Brey said the city's contribution will not be funded through property taxes. The funds will come from the City's Room Tax, or added to downtown tax incremental financing districts, "or any other municipal source as so instructed by the Common Council," the resolution says.
